Etienne Corriveau born 16 Jan 1642/43 in Fontclaireau, France (St-Pierre-les-Liens Parish); died 1692 in La Duraynte, Quebec, Canada. He was the son of Francois Corrivault and Marguerite Besnard. He married 65. Catherine Bureau 28 Oct 1669 in Ste. Famille, Isle of Orleans, Quebec.
Catherine Bureau, born Abt. 1651 in St Jean-en Greve Paris France died 01 Aug 1707 in St Michel Quebec. She was the daughter of 130. Jacques Bureau and Marguerite Vernier.
Notes for Etienne Corriveau:
Courrivault in France became Corriveau when Etienne immigrated to New France (Quebec)
Son of Francois and Marguerite Bernard born in 1643 and arrived in Canada ( New France ) in 1668.
Etienne was born in Fontclaireau, France and baptized on January 16, 1646 in the same town. His Parents were Francoius Courivault and Marguerite Bernard. Fontclaireau is in the Province of Angouleme and is located about 20 miles north of it's capitol, Angouleme, now called Charente.
When Etienne was twenty years old he sailed from the seaport of La Rochelle, France to Canada. He arrived in Quebec City about 1666. His first appearance on a record in Quebec is in 1669 as a migrant (Source: Raymond Corriveau, DGO, supplement 1,p.9)
After arriving in Canada, Etienne settled at St-Famille, Isle d Orleans, which is situated in the St-Lawrence River about ten miles north of Quebec City. It was here at St-Famille that Etienne at the age of 23 married Catherine Bureau, aged 18, on October 28, 1669. Catherine's parents were Jacques Bureau and Marguerite Verrier of Paris, France.
Etienne and Cather lived at St-Famille for the next nine years. Here they had their first five children, Jacques, Catherine, Francois, Etienne II and Pierre. Etienne supported his family by farming, hunting and fishing. In about 1679 when Etienne was about 33 years old he left the Isle d Orleans and moved to a piece of land at the seignior of La Durantaye which is located across from the island and on the south shore of the St-Lawrence River. The seignior of La Durantaye later took the name of St-Vallier. Here Etienne cleared the land of trees, built himself some kind of a log house for shelter and made a farm out of the land. Four more children were born to Etienne at this place, Marie, Julien, Jean Baptiste and Guillaume.
The Corriveau's were leading people in the town of La Durantaye. Etienne's first born son, Jacques was a Captain of the military all his life, as was Jacques son Jacques. Etienne lived out the rest of his life here on this farm. He died at the age of 46 years in the year 1692.
Notes for Catherine Bureau:
Catherine's Biography can be found in King's Daughter's and Founding Mothers: The Filles du Roi, 1663 - 1673 (see end note reference citation); According to information found on p. 171 Catherine was from either the parish of Saint-Jean-en-Greve (according to the marriage register) or the parish of Saint-Pierre (from the Marriage contract) in Paris.
She arrived in Canada in 1669 at about the age of 18, bringing with her a dowry of goods estimated at 100 lives.
(1663- 1673) In order to provide wifes and mothers to the colonists of 'NEW FRANCE" (Canada) the King of France provided a dowry for women who left France and agreed to marry in New France. They were cared for by the Ursulines and Hospital sisters until they found husbands. This rarely took more than a fortnight (two weeks).
Most Marriages for the Fille Du Roi were seasonal, often occurring during the fall of the year. This is partly due to the arrival of the ships from France and the agriculture and construction that was taking place during the spring and summer months.
